Story of Guilin: Beer Fish in Yangshuo

One of the outskirt area that is not to be missed during the Guilin tour is Yangshuo阳朔. This is where the famous Li-River漓江 is located whereby it's recommended to take the bamboo raft to travel along this long river to enjoy the beautiful scenery of mountains in Guilin while you're relaxing in a slow and leisurely pace.

The most famous food in Yangshuo is called Beer Fish啤酒鱼. The river fish is cooked in Beer and added with some local vegetable or chili per your wish, then being served in whole with the scales are still attached to the skin. The whole fish is laid flat on the big plate, so it's kind of easy for us to remove the whole piece of skin that is full with the scales on top; but it's still a bit weird and abnormal to us to see the uncleaned fish scales. Frankly, we don't really taste the Beer and instead the sourness is stronger. According to a local here, the Chili is influenced more by sourness that is mainly due to the weather and topography in Guilin. I'm an extreme non-river fish lover that I've to eat the fish with a lot of sliced chili, in order to cover up the natural soil taste in the fish meat itself.

Our next dish is the Fried Green Beans with Chopped Pork干扁四季豆 and Claypot Meat-stuffed Tofu酿豆腐煲. Our favourite is the Green Beans; even it seems to be a little drier, but it suits our taste with a moderate sweetness, sourness and spiciness. The chopped pork has added up the aroma and refreshment that goes well with the beans. The Tofu that has been stuffed with blended pork is cooked with some tomatoes and capsicums in the sour Chili of Guilin. Even we dislike the Chili, but the Tofu itself is very smooth.

There's been plenty restaurants in Yangshuo that serve Beer Fish. 大师傅啤酒鱼 is one the restaurant that is recommended by the local people here. It's always an adventurous journey for us to try new dish even though the taste doesn't suit us.

Restoran Kampar Fish Jelly that is Famous for the 'Hakka Noodle'

Restoran Kampar Fish Jelly, a weird name to you? From the name, I've been wondering what they're selling and guess what, they're actually famous for its Hakka Noodle and also the 'Niang Tofu酿豆腐'. Hakka Noodle is a wide, flat noodle that is made mainly from flour and egg; that makes the noodle softer and tastier. Talking about 酿豆腐, it's actually the stuffed dishes whereby either the blended fish meat or meat are stuffed inside the vegetable, tofu or bean curd sheets before being fried or boiled in soup.

To my surprise, Restoran Kampar Fish Jelly is owned by the sister of a friend of mine. I've never noticed about this restaurant till it's recommended by my colleagues. This restaurant that is located at Sungai Nibong in Penang consists of two shop houses but it always full with crowd from the industrial area during the lunch hour.
There's a lot of ingredients that you can choose from, either to be fried or to be boiled in soup. Additionally, you can also order the chicken feet, pork leg or herbal chicken to go with your Hakka Noodle. There's selections for your carbohydrate as well whereby you can have it in clear soup or the dried type with dark soy sauce. Normally, I'll choose the Koay Teow or Bee Hoon as I don't really enjoy the Hakka Noodle that I feel it's too soft and no chewiness at all. Somehow, this is much depending on your own favourites ;)

I'm the regular consumer of the chicken feet here. The chicken feet has been cooked sufficiently whereby the herbal soup is absorbed completely and the chicken feet is so soft that it'll just melt in your mouth. People always like the chicken feet for the collagen. Well, I'm unsure how true is that as I just like it for the taste. Do remember not to swallow the bones ya ;)

Restoran Kampar Fish Jelly is somewhere that I've always like for my lunch. I'll not say that the dishes here are very delicious but they do have some specialties of their own, depending on your own tastebuds. Anyway, it's great that they serve various ingredients that you can choose from.

Story of Guilin: Bread that is called 手撕包

Guilin is famous for its beautiful and natural scenery, there comes the 'The Greatest Mountains and Rivers under the Sky - 桂林山水甲天下'.

Let us talk about the stories of bread in Guilin that is called 手撕包. The direct translation means it's a bread that can be hand-torn. What has attracted us to try the bread is the layers that are circled nicely to form this big dough, while the butter and cream are layered together between the bread to give the sweet taste and aroma. Secondly, we're buying the bread as an advanced preparation to our breakfast, so that we can wake up at 9 or 11am ;)

Our first 手撕包 is bought at the MXCCAKE cake house in YangShuo阳朔. Each packet consists of two small doughs that are attached together with the cost at RMB 6.0 . The layers are thin that they're neatly layered into the long-oval shape. I like this smooth and compact bread yet it's not sticking to my teeth.

The next 手撕包 is bought at Fiona cake house in Guilin桂林 for our pre-dinner as we're just too hungry, walking over the streets to search for our dinner. The layers are thicker whereby they're more alike the big ribbons that are crossed together to form the big, round bread. It also costs us at RMB 6.0 but my friends prefer this for the thicker butter taste and also the stronger aroma. Our third bread is bought in Guilin as well, to be eaten as our last breakfast before departing home to M'sia. This time around, we've chosen the Moma cake house that is seem to be more sophisticated and elegant. The dough is having the thinnest layers among the all, but it's also the most expensive by costing us at RMB 8.0. The texture of the dough is rougher and the butter is not tasted much either. Anyway, the packing is more interesting and the bread is actually presented in a tidier way.

In comparison, the majority votes go to the Fiona cake house in Guilin whereby the bread is not only soft but the butter taste is also stronger and nicer. It means, you'll really taste the butter cream when the bread is in your mouth. I personally like the one in MXCCAKE as the bread is more compact and I do enjoy the little butter cream taste in the dough. I'm not the kind of person to like the oily butter. Overall, if we're talking about taste and price, the best vote will still go to Fiona cake house.

Ong Cheng Huat Seafood, somewhere I love for the Coconut Tuak

At Bagan Lallang in Butterworth, behind the housing area; it's located the Ong Cheng Huat Seafood王清发海鲜 or what the locals call it as Stall here. It's not a fancy restaurant and there's no air-conditioner, but it always packed with crowd especially during lunch hour or weekends. However, one good point is the efficiency or the speed of your food is served, within minutes... It's my turn to organize the eating trip and here we go to Ong Cheng Huat Seafood.
Talking about Stall, I love their signature drink of Coconut Tuak椰花酒. It's an alcoholic beverage that is made of fermented coconut flower dew. My favourite recipe is to mix the Tuak with Guinness Stout, because the bitterness of Guinness will neutralize the sweetness and sourness of the Tuak, resulting in a very smooth drink with a nice aroma. Anyway, not to drink too fast and too much... It's still an alcohol that can get you drunk ;)
Here comes our main character, the Steamed Red Snapper Head. The ingredients are just simpler the ginger, garlic and chili padi yet they've brought out the sweetness and freshness of the fish head perfectly. Moreover, we do enjoy the sourness of the soup that should come from the sour plum or the lime juice. It's the similar cooking method for the Kepah, but it's not as sweet as, as sour as and as delicious as the fish; I think partly is that the Kepah is too small and the meat is too thin.

Another famous dish here is the Spring Chicken. The meat is not only soft but the sauce to marinate the chicken has also absorbed into the chicken completely, leaving behind the aroma between your teeth. Anyway, this is not my plate as I don't think it really tastes very special or delicious and I definitely dislike the idea to eat the 'small-sized' chicken. The next dishes are the Homemade Fried Prawn Popiah and Fried Tofu that are served with the Thai Chili sauce. The prawns, celery and spices are layered among the popiah skin; being hot and crunchy upon serving. The Tofu is soft and smooth that it'll just 'melt' in my mouth, except that it's too oily.

Sorry to say that we've to eat 'Paul'... Actually, our next order is the Octopus that is served with the Chili sauce that has been mixed with the grounded peanuts. The dish tastes normal but I do enjoy the chewiness of the octopus. Not to forget the Fried Mantis Prawn with Dried Chili that is nothing special to be commented about; As usual, one of my favourite seafood. Kerabu Mango; it's the mixture of mango slices, sliced onions, chopped chili padi and cashew nuts in the sweet and sour sauce. I personally feel that the sauce is too thick and sweet.

Some carbohydrate to fulfill the stomach of the guys, here comes the Fried Beehoon with some prawns, green vegetable, bean sprouts and eggs. A simple dish but I'm wondering how the light and dark soy sauces have appealed here whereby I just can't stop spoon by spoon.

Everyone will have different preferences over your favourite dishes here. If you ask me, the Coconut Tuak and Steamed Fish Head are my motivations to be here. It's a wonderful day to spend the gathering time with a big group of colleagues. They close on Monday, but you can always call to confirm or to do the reservation at +604331 4782.

Farewell to my Dear Friend, Hooi Lin... at OXO Cafelab

When it's time to say Goodbye to a friend for her decision to join a new company, we've celebrated her farewell dinner in OXO Cafelab that is nearby Queensbay Penang.

It's just alike a norm that people will tend to be late and thus, the early birds - Hooi Lin, Chin Han and I have ordered a slice of Chocolate Banana Cake for our hungry stomachs. I won't know that it actually has banana if its not for the name, as I don't smell or taste the natural sweetness of banana itself.

What should we eat for our main courses? We've decided to do some sharing basis. The starter is the colourful Prawn Cocktail Salad. I like the crunchiness of the green apples, the fresh vegetables and the shell-less prawns that are perfectly dressed up by the thousand island sauce. We've taken two orders of pasta; the Fettucini A La Carbonara and the Chunky Pasta Chicken Bolognese Sauce that are in white creamy and red tomato sauces respectively. Just a quick remark: Don't put high expectation over the freshness of the seafood. The Fettucini is cooked in the white cream sauce with the slices of mushroom and ham but it somehow doesn't turn out to be over-creamy with a just-to-taste saltiness. I do prefer the Bolognese spaghetti that is full with the tiny, chopped chicken meat and the red tomato sauce has actually added a little sourness, to stimulate my appetite.

Another main character is the Hawaiian Chicken BBQ Pizza that I personally think it's tastier than Pizza Hut. I love the thin layer of bread dough that is not only crunchy but also being covered with chicken cubes, pineapples, capsicum; with a rich cheese spreads over the whole pizza. I can't recall the exact names of the next two dishes, but they should be sort of Fisherman Basket and the Chicken Thigh with Cheese in Indian Curry Sauce. The Fisherman Basket is actually a fried seafood platter that consists of prawn, squid and some wedges. The Curry Chicken is the one that catches my attention as it just goes well with the white rice. The curry here may not have a strong taste or nice curry aroma but with a little spiciness and the cheese, it does add on a special taste to experience a curry dish.

OXO Cafelab does not serve very delicious food that has impressed me for a returning visit. However, the ambient is suitable for a long chatting session as we're lazing on the comfortable, soft sofa. Moreover, I do enjoy this gathering with the whole bunch of good friends.
